Interview – Work in Japan

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

France

WHAT DO YOU DO IN JAPAN?

I have been working at a Pocket WiFi company (NINJA WiFi) for foreigners coming to Japan for about a year now, although I arrived in Japan 5 years ago.

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JAPAN?

Initially, I loved matsuri (festivals), manga, and anime, which is why I started learning Japanese in middle school, continuing to study it at university (Lyon 3).

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY IN THIS CITY?

I decided to go to Tokyo because it had the embassy and immigration offices, which seemed like the easiest option. Also, there’s more choice in terms of jobs and food.

WHERE IS YOUR LOCAL RECOMMENDATION IN THIS CITY?

I would recommend visiting Asakusa and Odaiba at least once! As for food, there’s so much choice in Tokyo! It’s hard to pick.

WHAT DID YOU ENJOY THE MOST WHILE STAYING ABROAD?

What I appreciate the most here is the safety and punctuality! Also, the cleanliness in the streets or toilets, for example, is a big plus (laughs). I think that’s what I like the most here.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE BEING IN JAPAN?

I would say making Japanese friends is a challenge. Even speaking Japanese, it’s very complicated to make Japanese friends. Another challenge would be job hunting, I suppose.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN JAPAN AND YOUR COUNTRY?

The nature of friendships between France and Japan is really different! In France, it is easy to make friends, whereas here, it’s much more complicated.

DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE AND FUTURE PROSPECTS?

Good question! I don’t know yet haha, we’ll see what the future holds. I’m learning Korean and plan to take the TOPIK this year, so maybe we’ll see where that can lead me?

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?

My dream would be to live worry-free and for all my family to be healthy! Then, maybe travel around the world? We’ll see if that’s possible haha

MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS WHO WILL GO TO JAPAN.

I recommend learning Japanese in a way that you enjoy! It could be with books, music, movies, etc. Don’t learn in a way that will make you hate Japanese.

HOW DO YOU LEARN JAPANESE?

I taught myself Japanese in middle school and then specialized in a university course in Japanese language. I learned with elements I loved, such as books, video games!
