What do you do in Japan?
I promote cross cultural understanding via educational language activities. In other words, I’m an English Teacher! 😆 Outside of teaching, you can find me running, searching for the best local eateries, and enjoying all the flowers and nature that Izu has to offer. 😊
I suppose how different Japan’s culture is from the U.S. Everything from the language, holidays, customs, and habits. I find myself always learning something new and expanding my perspective at the same time.
Why do you choose to stay in this city?
I think Minamiizu choose me lol. 😆 But, it was actually the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program that assigned me to this town. At first I was worried about it being too rural, but I think the rural charm got to me. The people here are very kind and welcoming, the seasons invite a new and beautiful scenery with the change, we’ve got the mountains and great beaches, and I can witness the prettiest sunrises and sunsets and starry nights whenever. And, whenever I leave and come back it feels like coming home now.
Where is your local recommendation in this city?
For scenery I definitely recommend Yumigahama and Cape Aiai! You can catch sunrise at Yumigahama, then enjoy sunset at South Point Cafe and Gift Shop at Cape Aiai. In the winter, Cape Aiai is nice for star gazing or watching any seasonal meteor showers. Then Aono River is nice to visit especially when the Kawazuzakura bloom in February! There’s also a lot of tasty food trucks that come to the Cherry Blossom Festival at Yunohana. Then Hirizo is good for snorkeling in the summer! You get a refreshing taste of Minamiizu melons with a melon parfait at Ougiya the Melon Cafe in Shimogamo! 🍈 Then the flower field in town has canola flowers in Spring and then sunflowers in the summer. It’s great for pictures and just to sit in and be surrounded by flowers. 🌻
What do you enjoy the most while staying in Japan?
Getting to travel to different places in Japan and meeting the locals that live there and the people that also traveling ther. When I get to see a place that I read about or saw a picture of in person, I cannot quite describe the feeling but I definitely gain a new sense of appreciation. And through my conversations with the locals and tourists, I find myself wanting to come back and explore more. 😊
What is the biggest challenge being in Japan?
The language 😭😆 It’s a lot to memorize and then figure out how to use, but when I’m able to read an article, communicate my thoughts, or even make one of students laugh it feels very rewarding and it keeps me going. 😊
What are the differences between Japan & your country?
I suppose the attitude towards teachers in Japan. I feel like teachers in Japan treat the kids like their own sometimes with how attentive they are to their school life and home life outside of lessons. They also communicate this the other teachers. They also try to make events that the kids want to do happen. It’s hard work and a lot of work, but it really makes a difference. There are, and I’ve had teachers like this in the U.S., but I unfortunately I don’t think they’re always recognized for their hardwork or given the support and leeway to do things they want to do to support their students. Of course there are many other differences, but this one stands out to me the most.
My next dream is to bake in Japan! If possible, I want to work at a bakery or a traditional confectionery to learn first hand how to make Japanese sweets. Ideally, I want to learn more about the sweets and delicacies from around the world and share what I learn about them with other people. I think food has a magic to connect people from across cultures and that promotes understanding and kinship.
Favorite Japanese (Anime / Artist / Song / Food / Movie)? and why?
When it comes to movies, my favorites are Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, and 国宝 (Kokuho, National Treasure). When I saw Kiki’s Delivery Service, I knew I wanted to be like her someday and go on an adventure. And I found myself rooting for her when she faced hardships. For Howl’s Moving Castle, perhaps due to how quotable and visually appealing it was. I also liked how Sophie did things even while afraid. And, while watching 国宝 I felt like I went through so many emotions while watching this film, so much that it almost hurt. 😆 I think I’d need to watch it a couple of more times to fully understand it, but I think I’d enjoy it every time. 😊
