INTRODUCTION

IAY International Academy Japanese Language School is a Nisshinkyo-accredited Japanese language school located in the heart of Sapporo, Hokkaido. Founded in 1969, it has long provided Japanese language education for international students aiming for higher education or daily communication skills. The school supports student visa pathways for long-term study (1 year 3 months to 2 years) as well as shorter programs for those already in Japan. Classes are small and supportive, allowing plenty of interaction between teachers and learners. Beyond language classes, IAY offers cultural activities, local excursions and practical life assistance such as guidance for administrative procedures and integration into life in Sapporo.

COURSES

Long-Term Japanese Course

IAY’s Long-Term Japanese Course is designed for students who plan to deepen their language proficiency with a focus on academic and career goals, including university or vocational school admission in Japan. Available with student visa support, this course runs from 1 year 3 months up to 2 years, with the first year called the regular course and the second year as a specialized course. Students study all four language skills—speaking, listening, reading and writing—and receive JLPT preparation and extracurricular cultural experiences to enhance real-world Japanese ability. Regular intake periods include April, July, October and January.

Short-Term Japanese Course

For learners already in Japan or those holding a visa, IAY offers short-term Japanese courses that focus on balanced language learning—reading, writing, listening and speaking—in small classes. These programs are suitable for students who want to improve Japanese quickly without enrolling in a long-term visa course. The curriculum allows access to regular class content and is ideal for travelers, working holiday holders or residents seeking structured study in Sapporo. Private or customized lessons are also available for those with specific language goals or flexible schedules, including online options.

ACCOMMODATION

Student Dormitory / Shared Housing

IAY supports students in finding nearby student dormitories or shared housing in Sapporo. These accommodations typically feature private or shared rooms with common facilities such as kitchen, laundry and lounge areas, allowing students to live independently while studying. Shared living with fellow international learners supports language practice outside class and helps build community. Sapporo’s public transportation and services make daily commuting convenient. Rates vary by housing type, room size and contract length, so students are advised to contact IAY directly for the latest pricing and availability.

Homestay

Homestay options are available for students who want immersive language practice and cultural experiences. Living with a Japanese host family provides daily conversational opportunities and exposure to local customs and lifestyle, which can greatly enhance classroom learning. Typically, students have their own private room and may receive meals depending on the family arrangement. This choice is ideal for short-term visitors or learners seeking deeper cultural integration and personalized support in daily life. Homestay locations are within commuting distance of the school, and placement is coordinated by the school upon request.
