WHERE ARE YOU FROM?: Russia
WHAT DO YOU DO IN JAPAN?: I work as a content creator, in marketing, PR, and other online roles, as well as in the apparel industry.

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JAPAN?: I became interested in Japan after a friend introduced me to an anime called “Death Note”. I was curious about the songs played in its opening and ending sequences, which led me to discover Japanese J-rock. This was the beginning of my interest in various Japanese bands and fueled my desire to visit Japan someday. At the same time, I became interested in learning Japanese and started attending a Japanese language school. There, a teacher informed me about the possibility of studying in Japan as an exchange student.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY IN THIS CITY?: I had been living in the Kanto region of Japan (Kanagawa Prefecture, Tokyo, and Saitama Prefecture) since I arrived in Japan, but after growing tired of city life, I moved to Okinawa two years ago. My partner is from Okinawa, and I had often visited and come to love Okinawa, so I wanted to try living there.
WHERE IS YOUR LOCAL RECOMMENDATION IN THIS CITY?: Of course, when you think of Okinawa, you think of its beautiful seas. In the resort areas, you can enjoy marine sports. While islands like Ishigaki and Miyako are popular, the main island of Okinawa has many attractions too. If you head to the northern part of the main island, there are mountains and the Yanbaru National Park, which is a World Heritage Site. It’s very pleasant to drive to Cape Hedo by rental car. At night, you can see an uncountable number of stars. For history lovers, I recommend touring the Ryukyu era castles (Gusuku) and World War II sites. There are also many local festivals in each area. Okinawan cuisine is quite unique and different from mainland Japan, but it’s very healthy, so I definitely recommend trying it, like Goya Champuru, Okinawa Soba, and Umibudo. By the way, Okinawa has the earliest cherry blossom viewing in Japan (from mid-January).
WHAT DID YOU ENJOY THE MOST WHILE STAYING ABROAD?: It’s a tough question since I’ve been living in Japan for 11 years (laughs). I love Japan’s nature and never get tired of it. Of course, I love Japanese cuisine too, but the best part has to be the people. There are many kind people, making it a very comfortable environment to live in.
DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE AND FUTURE PROSPECTS AFTER YOU START YOUR JOURNEY?: The biggest change was falling in love. I never thought I would end up with a foreigner as my destined partner. It opened up my world. The term “foreigner” itself became meaningless, and I think I’ve become very open-minded. I also developed a renewed deep interest in Japan, and now consider it my second home.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?: I want to launch my own apparel brand. I enjoy designing clothes, and I would like to create outfits featuring motifs from Okinawa as well as my home country, Russia. My goal is to create content that conveys the charm of Japanese regions, including Okinawa, and to introduce these areas to an international audience.
MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS WHO WILL GO TO JAPAN.: Japan is a wonderful country, and I’m sure you’ll make countless fantastic memories. It’s important to have an understanding and respectful attitude towards different cultures, even when things don’t go as expected. Then, you’ll have an unforgettable and enjoyable trip. The culture and local cuisine vary greatly from prefecture to prefecture, so I recommend venturing beyond the classic routes to the north or south (like Okinawa, for example😸).
HOW DO YOU LEARN JAPANESE?: I tried self-study and language schools in my home country, but they weren’t very effective. I started learning gradually when I actually started living in Japan, making Japanese friends, working part-time jobs, and using Japanese daily. Although study methods vary from person to person, I think it’s very important to communicate with native speakers of the language.

■ 日本で何をしていますか？
コンテンツクリエイター，マーケティング，PRなどのオンラインの仕事とアパレルの仕事をしています。
■ なぜ日本に興味を持ちましたか？
友達にデスノートというアニメを紹介されて，そのオーペニンクとエンディングに流れていた曲を気になって調べました。それは日本のJ-rockを好きになるきっかけでした。そこから色々バンドを聴いたりしていつか日本に行ってみたいと思いました。同時に日本語に興味を持って日本語の塾に行きました。そこの教師に日本に留学生としていけることを教えてくれました。
■ なぜこの街に住むことを選びましたか。
日本に来てからずっと関東(神奈川県，東京都，埼玉県)に住んでいましたが大都市の生活に疲れて2年前沖縄に移住しました。恋人は沖縄の人なので前から沖縄によく行っていて好きになりましたので住んでみたかったです。
■ この街のおすすめの場所はどこですか？
もちろん沖縄と言えば綺麗な海ですね。リゾートの地域に行けばマリンスポーツなども楽しめます。石垣島や宮古島という離島はとても人気ですが沖縄本島にも沢山見所があります。本島の北部に行くと山と世界遺産に登録されている山原国立公園があります。レンタカーして辺戸岬までドライブするのがとても気持ちがいいです。夜になると数えきれない殆どの星空を眺めます。歴史好きな人に琉球時代のお城(グスク)や第二次世界大戦に関するスポット巡りがおすすめです。又は各地域にローカルの祭り沢山あります。例えば沖縄のエイサーダンスなど沖縄料理も大分独特で本土と少し違います。でもとても健康に良いのでぜひ食べてみて欲しいです。例えばゴーヤーチャンプルや沖縄そば，ウミブドウなど。因みに沖縄では日本一早い花見ができます(一月中旬から)。
■ 日本に住んでいて最も楽しかったことは何ですか？
私は日本に住んで11年目になるのでかなり難しい質問です(笑) 日本の自然も大好きで飽きません。もちろん，日本の料理も大好きだが一番はやっぱり人ですね。親切な人が多くてとても住みやすい環境だと思います。
■ 旅を始めてから、人生や将来の展望にどのような変化がありましたか？
恋をしたことですね。前は外国人が私の運命の人になると思いませんでした。そのおかげで世界が開いたと思います。私にとって外国人という言葉自体あまり意味なくなってとてもオーペンマインドになったかと思います。そして日本のことに改めて深く興味を持って日本は私のセカンドホームだと思うようになりました。
■ あなたの将来の夢や目標はなんですか？
自分のアパレルブランドを立ち上げたいです。洋服を作るのが好きで沖縄のモチーフ，又は母国のロシアのモチーフを使った服装を作りたいです。沖縄をはじめ日本の地方の魅力を伝えるコンテンツを作って外国人に日本の地方のことを知ってもらいたいです。
■ これから日本に来る皆さんへのメッセージはありますか？
日本は素敵な国できっと数えきれないほど素晴らしい思い出ができると思います。納得行かなくて異文化に対する理解•尊重の姿勢を持つのは大事です。そしたら一生忘れない最高に楽しい旅ができると思います。都道府県によって文化や名物料理なども大分異なるのでクラシックルートから外れて北か南(例えば沖縄😸)を訪ねるのもおすすめです。
■ 日本語はどのように勉強しましたか？
母国で独学や塾にチャレンジをしていたがあまり効果がなかったです。実際に日本で生活して日本人の友達できてバイトをして毎日のように日本語を使うようになったら少しずつ覚えました。人によって勉強方法が違うけど，やっぱりその言語のネイティブスピーカーとコミュニケーションすることはとても大事だと思います。
