What do you do in Japan? 日本では何をしていますか?
My name is Mhylem and I came to Japan with a student visa. I will graduate next month from Japanese language school. Before coming here, I graduated in Peru with a degree in Animation, and shortly after finishing my studies, I decided to continue growing in Japan. While studying, I worked online at night as a video editing and post-production instructor. At the same time, I support my older sister, who has been living in Tokyo for over ten years, by helping her with her twin children. Even with a busy schedule, I made time to build friendships and connect with the Latin community in Japan. I also started creating content on social media, where I share my experiences, combining my passions for video editing, storytelling, and teaching.
I have always been drawn to Japan because of its strong sense of order, respect, and discipline. There is something inspiring about a society that values responsibility and harmony in everyday life. At the same time, Japan is incredibly diverse. Even within such structure, you can find spaces where different cultures coexist and where you never feel forced to forget your roots. As a Latina living here, I’ve discovered communities that celebrate cultural identity while embracing Japanese traditions. That balance between structure and diversity fascinates me. Japan challenges you to grow, to adapt, and to become more independent. For me, it represents both personal growth and the opportunity to see the world from a completely different perspective.
Why do you choose to stay in this city? なぜこの街を選びましたか?
I chose to live in Tokyo because my older sister has been here for more than ten years, and having family support in a foreign country makes a huge difference. Moving to another country can be overwhelming, so knowing I had someone close to guide me and support me emotionally gave me confidence. Beyond that, Tokyo is a city full of opportunities. It is dynamic, creative, and constantly evolving. You can experience traditional temples in the morning and futuristic cityscapes at night. The city offers inspiration everywhere, which is especially meaningful for someone like me who works in creative fields. Tokyo pushes me to dream bigger while also giving me the comfort of family.
Where is your local recommendation in this city? この街でのおすすめスポットは?
I highly recommend Nakano. It is a quiet and welcoming neighborhood, perfect for spending time with friends or family. There are parks where you can relax, especially during festival season when local matsuri bring the streets to life with music, food stalls, and traditional performances. At the same time, Nakano is a paradise for anime and pop culture fans because of Nakano Broadway, a multi-level shopping complex filled with unique stores, collectibles, and hidden treasures. I love that Nakano feels local and authentic, not overly crowded, yet still full of personality. It represents a softer, more community-oriented side of Tokyo that many visitors don’t always see.
What do you enjoy the most while staying in Japan? 日本での生活で一番気に入っていることは?
What I enjoy the most is meeting new people and discovering different perspectives. Living in Japan has allowed me to connect with individuals from many countries and backgrounds, which constantly expands my way of thinking. I love exploring new places, from small neighborhoods to famous landmarks, and then sharing those experiences through my videos. Being able to document my journey and inspire others makes everything more meaningful. Japan has become not only a place where I study and live, but also a source of creative inspiration. Every new interaction, every cultural detail, and every challenge becomes material for growth and storytelling.
What is the biggest challenge being in Japan? 日本で一番大変だと感じることは?
The biggest challenge has definitely been the language. Even when you understand a conversation, it can be frustrating not being able to express yourself exactly the way you want. Sometimes that limitation feels exhausting because you know your thoughts are more complex than what you can currently say. However, I also see it as part of the process. Learning a language is learning a new way to think, and that takes time. Every mistake becomes a lesson. I am still improving, but step by step I feel more confident. Instead of seeing it as a barrier, I try to see it as proof that I am growing.
What are the differences between Japan & your country? 日本と母国の違いは何ですか?
One of the biggest differences between Japan and Peru is the level of public safety and organization. In Japan, you can feel a strong sense of trust in everyday life. People respect rules, public spaces are clean, and systems function efficiently. In contrast, Peru, like many Latin American countries, struggles with insecurity and disorganization. It is not something we are proud of, but it is part of a complex social reality that we continue working to improve. Despite these differences, Peru has warmth, resilience, and strong community bonds. Living in Japan has allowed me to appreciate both worlds: the structure and safety here, and the emotional richness of my home country.
My dream is to achieve stability in every aspect of my life; personally, professionally, and emotionally. I want to continue learning, improving my skills, and developing my career in creative media. I hope to keep supporting my family and giving back to the people who have supported me. At the same time, I dream of building a home with the right person, creating a life based on mutual growth and understanding. Success for me is not only about career achievements, but about balance; feeling fulfilled, connected, and constantly evolving while staying true to who I am.
Favorite Japanese (Anime / Artist / Song / Food / Movie)? and why? 好きな日本の作品(アニメ/アーティスト/曲/食べ物/映画)は?理由も教えてください。
My favorite Japanese song is “Futarigoto” by RADWIMPS. It holds a very special meaning for me because it was the first song my japanese boyfriend dedicated to me when we started dating. The lyrics are beautiful and emotional, and listening to it in Japanese makes it even more powerful. Even when I didn’t fully understand every word at the beginning, I could feel the emotion behind it. As I improved my Japanese, the song became even more meaningful. For me, it represents not only love, but also my journey in Japan; learning, feeling, and connecting through a different language.
