Interview on Life in Japan
*English Original / Japanese Translation
Where are you from?
South Africa
How long have you stayed in Japan?
Almost 7 years
What do you do in Japan?
I’m a housewife and mother of two little boys. I love to read, mostly fantasy and romance novels, spend time with family and we travel often. I love creating and would love to spend more time with arts and crafts this year. I also plan on starting a garden soon and hopefully manage not to kill the plants.
My husband is Japanese and this is where we chose to live. I get to go home once/twice a year so the kids get to experience both cultures and learn 3 languages.
I would love to learn more Japanese culture and travel locally but hubby is keen on… leaving any chance he gets
Why do you choose to stay in this city?
I have only ever lived in one city in Japan and honestly love it here. It’s city enough so I don’t get bored, but close enough to nature so I don’t feel smothered by concrete.
My husband moved here from Tochigi to start a new job and we have lived and raised our kids in this city the entire time I have been in Japan. Apart from my city, I spent some time traveling in Tokyo but I mever liked it enough to want to live there.
Where is your local recommendation in this city?
I highly recommend Funabashi Andersen Park. It’s one of our favourite places to go to as a family. It’s a park dedicated to Hans Christian Andersen and his fairytales and as you already know, I love fantasy. Being able to go to a park that celebrates one of my favourite writers but also has a fantastic range of things to do for every age group is amazing.
They also have seasonal events, flower gardens and Danish snacks. I can’t wait to go again when the weather is nice.
What do you enjoy the most while staying in Japan?
How safe I feel in general. Being from SA I learnt to look over my shoulder, keep everything locked, be vigilant at all times. It’s exhausting. Here I feel a bit more free. I feel calmer.
I also like the healthcare system. As someone who has a chronic illness, it’s nice to be able to see a specialist and not have to wait months to see him, or wonder if insurance will cover him.
Generally, I also love the weather. Not summer though. Even winter is nice and sunny. It’s comforting even though it’s cold.
What is the biggest challenge being in Japan?
Language. Even after all these years I still know very little. Life has kept getting in the way of studying. Hopefully once both kids are in school I can finally invest more time into studying.
Making friends here is also quite hard. There’s always some sort of distance.
What are the differences between Japan & your country?
There are so many differences but I feel like people are much more open and friendly in SA. Also food, I miss having a larger variety of foods, biltong shops on every corner and braais every weekend. But when I’m in SA, I start missing Japanese foods again
Favorite Japanese (Anime / Artist / Song / Food / Movie)? and why?
Radwimps songs in Your Name anime. I had never heard anything like it and it’s quite far from what I normally listen to but I do love how the music feels.
