Interview – Japanese Teacher in Japan

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Japan

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF!

Hello! I’m Mitsuko, an online Japanese teacher. I’m from Fukuoka. I live in Macau and also work as a tour guide/KOL. I love traveling, delicious food, music and movies.

TELL US ABOUT THE CHARM OF THE CITY YOU ARE CURRENTLY LIVING IN.

Macau is an attractive fusion of East and West, with colorful Portuguese-style streets and traditional Chinese culture. The huge casino resort is gorgeous. New resorts are being built one after another, and I am amazed at the speed of development. Although it is a very small town, it has a lot of charm and is very enjoyable.

WHERE IS YOUR LOCAL RECOMMENDATION IN THIS CITY?

The beautiful scenery of the world heritage cityscape is recommended for photography enthusiasts. There are many delicious foods in Macau. Portuguese cuisine, dim sum, and egg tarts are especially recommended.

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TEACH JAPANESE?

It all started when I broke my leg and couldn’t leave the house for a month. At this time, I studied for the Japanese language teacher qualification exam. After obtaining my qualification, I began my career as a Japanese language teacher at a language school in Macau. Due to Covid, I have had more time to teach Japanese online.

HOW ARE YOU TEACHING JAPANESE NOW?

I teach on the online platforms ”Amazing Talker” and ”italki”.

Also I post short videos on SNS.

WHAT DO YOU FIND ENJOYABLE ABOUT TEACHING JAPANESE?

I’m happy that students are interested in Japanese language and culture. I like listening to students’ stories about their travels and life in Japan. I especially enjoy seeing students enjoy conversation with me in Japanese, study abroad or immigrate to Japan, and improve their Japanese skills. It’s also fun to receive comments and reactions on SNS.

WHAT DO YOU FIND DIFFICULT ABOUT TEACHING JAPANESE?

I work hard to make sure my students have fun learning and feel like they are improving their Japanese. I’m always thinking about creating example sentences and interesting videos that match the interests and lifestyles of my students. My goal is to continue lessons that make students feel like ”Japanese is fun! I understand it!” and want to study more.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS IMPORTANT WHEN LEARNING JAPANESE?

I think it’s important to speak, to practice out loud and over and over again. Shadowing is recommended to improve your skills. Saying lines and singing along to your favorite anime, movies, dramas, and songs will help you learn Japanese flow.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?

I would be happy if more people were interested in Japan and the Japanese language and had fun learning it. My dream is to get a job promoting Japan and my hometown, Fukuoka.
