Interview – Study in Japan

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

United States

WHY DO YOU STUDY JAPANESE?

I’ve been interested in Japan since I was kid because of anime and video games. As I got older, I started reading more about Japanese history and culture and knew I wanted to go there one day. I started studying Japanese so that by the time I got to Japan, I could interact meaningfully with the culture.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL?

Study at「Kyoto Minsai Language School」in Kyoto.

There are a lot of different nationalities from across the world represented at my school. Because of that, I’ve gotten to meet people from a lot of different countries and learn about their country and culture, which I couldn’t have done otherwise. Also, my school has a tea ceremony club, which is a big plus because I’m interested in traditional Japanese activities.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY IN THIS CITY?

I chose to live in Kyoto because of how traditional it is compared to cities like Osaka and Tokyo and also because of how integrated it is with the surrounding nature. I prefer more quiet places as opposed to urban environments, and Kyoto gives you the convenience of a city with the nature and tranquility of the countryside.

WHERE IS YOUR LOCAL RECOMMENDATION IN THIS CITY?

For scenery within Kyoto itself, the Kamo River by the Gion Corner is a beautiful part of town and very enjoyable to walk. There are a ton of amazing restaurants all around the city, depending on your tastes. For those who like beer, Kyoto has a large craft beer scene.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST WHILE LIVING IN JAPAN?

I enjoy being out in nature. In terms of natural beauty, Japan is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The color changes during fall and spring are always a sight to behold. Regardless of what kind of scenery you like, Japan has it.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE BEING IN JAPAN?

Traveling to Japan and living in Japan are two different things, which I didn’t realize before living in Japan. Because Japanese culture is so different from the cultures of other countries, there is a lot of things you have to learn.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN JAPAN AND YOUR COUNTRY?

Communication is very different in the US compared to Japan. Americans are generally very direct in their communication, whereas Japanese people are generally indirect. This means you have to develop the ability to read into things if you don’t already have the ability to do so.

DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE AND FUTURE PROSPECTS?

Living in Japan has affected my life in many positive ways. For one, I’ve become more resilient emotionally and mentally because of the challenges of living in another country. My appreciation of nature and its beauty has increased significantly compared to when I lived in the US. I’ve been told that Japanese speakers are in demand in the job market, so I feel good occupationally regarding my choice to study Japanese.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?

My dream is to travel the world and study other languages. Before I die, I’d like to be able to say I experienced life in its entirety. With this in mind, the world is such a large place, with so many different people and cultures that I want to get to know more deeply.

MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS WHO WILL GO TO JAPAN.

It won’t always be easy, but the feeling of interacting with Japanese people in their language is the best. When studying gets hard or boring, remember why you wanted to learn Japanese in the first place.
