Interview – Story in Japan

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

India

WHAT DO YOU DO IN JAPAN?

I work as an English Professor in Japan.

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JAPAN?

Being from India, I find Japan to be very different culturally. It is not as loud as India, It is also much smaller than India and hence I can visit places easily on the Shinkansen. I enjoy traveling and exploring. I have also started appreciating all the beautiful mountains of Japan. Japan has plenty of nature trails, mountains, shrines, and several natural wonders.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY IN THIS CITY?

I live in Kanazawa, and I moved here from Osaka quite recently. Kanazawa is a beautiful, compact city. It is walkable and close to Hakusan. I chose to live here because it is very different from other parts of Japan and has interesting historical sightseeing spots.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN THIS CITY?

My favorite places in Kanazawa are Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle, Nagamachi district, restaurants, and bars around the Katamachi neighborhood. My favorite Indian restaurant in Kanazawa is Aashirwaad and I enjoy hanging out at Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Cafe.

WHAT DID YOU ENJOY THE MOST WHILE STAYING ABROAD?

I have enjoyed traveling around Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Some of my best memories are innumerous visits to different shrines in Kyoto, climbing Mt.Gozaisho in Mie prefecture, visiting Ishigaki and the remote islands of Okinawa, and visiting Furano in the summertime.

DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE AND FUTURE PROSPECTS AFTER YOU START YOUR JOURNEY?

Moving to Japan has been life-changing in several ways. I have learned to become more patient and self-reflective. I have adapted quite a bit to the Japanese culture while learning to appreciate my culture better. When I moved here, I had not planned on living here for a long time. But now, I am thinking of staying longer.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?

I would love to open a South Indian Vegan Cafe in Kanazawa. Being a vegetarian, I am cons looking for opportunities to talk about vegetarianism and veganism. Hopefully, I can also inc awareness about food from my part of India in Japan.

MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS WHO WILL GO TO JAPAN.

Japan is picture-perfect and has stunning activities for nature lovers and those who enjoy art and architecture. It is one of the safest countries for solo travelers, especially for solo female travelers.

Do visit Japan repeatedly so you can appreciate all four seasons.
