Interview – Japan

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Hungary

WHAT DO YOU DO IN JAPAN?

I mainly “lived” in Japan, I spent my childhood and primary school years there. Later, as an adult, I returned several times on scholarships to study.

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JAPAN?

Since we moved to Japan for four years when I was eight, I took a liking to the country very early on. It was wonderful to go to school there and I really enjoyed it.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY IN THIS CITY?

I lived in Tokyo for four years and in Kofu for one and a half years. Neither was really my choice, but it gave me the opportunity to spend extended periods of time in both large and small cities.

WHERE IS YOUR LOCAL RECOMMENDATION IN THIS CITY?

I lived in Tokyo a long time ago, I think everything has changed there… 😀 But in and around Kofu, there is something for everyone looking for a classic Japanese small-town atmosphere. The city is surrounded by stunning nature, including the very nearby Mount Fuji.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST WHILE STAYING ABROAD?

Combini ^^ Japan I think is a very well organized and comfortable country, which I enjoyed very much. There was a solution for everything, a plan and a responsible person. I like things to work.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE BEING IN JAPAN?

Good question. Maybe it’s not having your family and friends there with you. Unfortunately, that was one of the reasons I ended up moving home. Everything else I think can be learned.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN JAPAN AND YOUR COUNTRY?

A lot of things. The culture, the language, the customs, the manners and the people are different. It’s impossible to list them all. Each culture is very unique and special and precious. This is what you really understand when you live abroad. I can honestly say that living in Japan made me love not only Japan, but also Hungary much more.

DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE AND FUTURE PROSPECTS?

In almost all areas. I studied Japanese at university in Hungary and I studied Japanese at university in Kofu. In fact, Japanese language and culture are present in my life at every moment, and that is what I have made my job: I still teach Japanese.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?

One day to show Japan to my family who have never seen it. To experience its beauty together and go everywhere together. Maybe that is my biggest dream now. ^^

MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS WHO WILL GO TO JAPAN.

It will be the best trip of your life! No need to overthink it, it’s all worked out and it works, even if you don’t understand it at first. Trust the system and you’ll be fine. Oh, and don’t be more Japanese than the Japanese people… 😀

HOW DO YOU LEARN JAPANESE?

It was mainly something I learned naturally as a child, which I supplemented at university. Since I’ve been teaching, I keep finding something I’ve never heard or understood before. With our online language school starting in 2020, I am actually constantly learning again. At our online Japanese language school, Nihon GO, we also believe that each course should be at a +1 level for everyone. This is what I am aiming for.
