Interview – Travel in Japan

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Fiji & United States

WHAT DO YOU DO IN JAPAN?

We are digital nomads traveling through Japan to experience different prefectures, cultures, and food and learn the way of life of the Japanese people. We vlog about our experience on our Youtube Channel @wewanderlustco and write experiential travel guides for those interested in travel and adventure.

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JAPAN?

Japan has a special place in our hearts because as we all know it, it is the most trustworthy society in the world. We love the beautiful culture, way of life, consideration for others, and Japanese philosophies on living a good life. Also, we feel very safe and appreciate the consistency of politeness throughout the country.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY IN THIS CITY?

We stayed mostly in Itabashi, Tokyo but traveled throughout Japan to experience different prefectures:) We did a 21-day JR pass journey from Tokyo down to Fukuoka and then back up to Hokkaido. Then we did a winter 2-week road trip where we traveled through Fukushima, Niigata, Nagano, Kyoto, Osaka, Yamanashi, and then back to Tokyo. It was a blast and an unforgettable trip of our lives!

WHERE IS YOUR LOCAL RECOMMENDATION IN THIS CITY?

Asakusa is quite a nice area with lots to do and see with a variety of food options. But since we love nature, Okutama is beautiful full of mountains, gorges, hot springs, and rivers. Meiji Jingu Forest is also enchanting, Todoroki Valley, and Institute for Nature Study 💛

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST WHILE STAYING ABROAD?

The soft, courteous nature of Japanese people, the culture, cleanliness, and consideration of others (the collective- the world has much to learn from Japanese people)

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE BEING IN JAPAN?

The language barrier but everyone tries their best and it works out in the end. Halal food options can sometimes be hard to find but there’s always Vegan Ramen, Karaage, or Miso soup.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN JAPAN AND YOUR COUNTRY?

The culture! Americans and Western society as a whole an individualistic societies with putting themselves first. Japan always tries to put others first. American culture is more aggressive but Japan puts the collective first which we love.

DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE AND FUTURE PROSPECTS?

Japan is such a wonderful place not only to visit but to live and experience the culture on a daily basis. We would definitely consider moving to Japan for a softer life.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?

Our dream is to make enough money as digital nomads to open schools for underprivileged children around the world. We will turn our dreams into reality one day.

MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS WHO WILL GO TO JAPAN.

Respect Japanese people, their culture, and their way of life. Learning Japanese will enable you to learn about Japanese culture in-depth on a totally different level and make local friends easily. Your travel experiences become much richer and you’ll be able to enjoy Japanese food culture more seamlessly when you learn more of the Japanese language.

HOW DO YOU LEARN JAPANESE?

We use a few apps and watch YouTube videos to learn Japanese. We have a couple of Japanese friends who speak English and who also help us with language learning sometimes.
